Poll: Two-Thirds of Teens See Borrowers, Not Government, Responsible for Paying Off  Student Loan Debt

A new survey of 1,000 teens by Junior Achievement® (JA) USA and Voya Foundation shows that nearly two-thirds of teens, or 65 percent, believe borrowers are ultimately responsible for paying off their student loans, even if they borrowed more money than they are able to pay off, while 11 percent believe the government should do so. Fewer, 7 percent, believe it is the responsibility of the college and 5 percent think it’s up to the lender to resolve.

On Thursday, April 21, 2016 Junior Achievement of Greater Washington (JA®) will be partnering with the Center for Global Policy Solutions to support the efforts of the 2016 Color of Wealth Summit that will be hosted at the U.S. Capitol Complex.

The third annual Color of Wealth Summit, themed “The Inclusion Revolution: Race, Economic Mobility, and the Future of America,” will focus on strengthening entrepreneurship in communities of color and on ways to prevent gentrification from displacing existing residents. The summit seeks to engage Members of Congress, Congressional staff, the media, and the public in a dialogue about the racial wealth gap, its effect on marginalized households, its impact on the U.S. economy, and solutions for closing the gap.

The Summit serves as an opportunity for over 100 young people to gather and develop the skills they will need to make their mark in their schools, communities, and in the world.

Omega World Travel has recently agreed to expand their partnership with Junior Achievement of Greater Washington to serve as the JA Finance Park® Vacation storefront partner in the forthcoming JA Finance Park® Montgomery County, opening in 2018. Freedom H.S. students participate in High School Heroes program to give over 300 third graders in VA the JA® experience

On Friday, March 11, Freedom High School students participated in their first ever High School Heroes program by teaching Junior Achievement® programs to elementary school students in Virginia. The High School Heroes program allows regional high school students to prepare and volunteer in the classroom at local elementary schools. It is an opportunity for the high school students to practice their leadership and professional presentation skills, while teaching elementary school students critical life skills and serving as role models for them.

JA Greater Washington Local Partners Honored With U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award At JA Volunteer Summit in NYC

Last week, Junior Achievement® honored two of its dedicated partners, Capital One and Bank of America, with a 2014-2015 U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award. Capital One and Bank of America were two of just 60 organizations nationwide that were chosen for this award. The organizations receiving the awards provided JA® with significant volunteer resources during the 2014-15 school year. The awards were presented at a gala dinner on March 8 in New York City in conjunction with JA®’s quarterly national board of directors meeting.

Elizabeth Andrew once said, "Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart." I don't think there could be truer words written about our very own JA® volunteers. 

And, as we gear up to celebrate National Volunteer Week in just a few short weeks, it's important that we here at Junior Achievement® stop to reflect on what role they play in inspiring the next generation with hope for the future.
