As a sixth grader, it can be easy to feel confused or lost when first exposed to financial concepts such as taxes, interest, budgeting, 401ks, and insurance. Mission-driven organizations were first popularized as a term in the early 2000s, but have recently gained even more momentum and popularity as consumers begin to demand that the companies and organizations they support act in socially responsible ways.
However, in those few short years, the sector has both expanded and changed dramatically. In education in particular, mission-driven organizations have begun to feel some tension as the students they often reach out to prefer screens to paper, styluses to pencils, swiping to flipping a page. Junior Achievement, the Colorado Spring, Colorado-based nonprofit organization that aims to "inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy," has in fact, however, taken this potential strain in stride.

Children living in poverty have few ideas and even fewer role models to point the way. "Doctor, lawyer, nurse or sports star" are the usual answers.

Of the 18,300 NCAA men playing basketball in 2013, just 47, or 1.2 percent of all players, were drafted into the pros, according the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The odds aren't much better for football players with roughly 71,000 NCAA players vying for just 255 professional jobs, or for baseball players where 6.8 percent of the 3,976 participants make the big leagues.

There's no doubt that our economy continues to become increasingly more complex. Business is changing to keep pace with demand and competition, and employers are in need of a workforce that is well-equipped to evolve to meet changing needs and circumstances. While uncertainty can be challenging, 2010 Junior Achievement Essay Competition winner Adam Middleton said it best: "There is reason for hope, as the Greater Washington business community can learn from the minds of tomorrow... how this country will once again be the dominant global power."
