What do JA's programs teach?
JA programs educate students about financial literacy and begin at the elementary school level, teaching children how they can impact the world around them as individuals, workers and consumers. JA programs continue through the middle grades and high school, focusing on the key content areas of financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship.
Do I or my school have to pay for JA's programs?
Neither you nor your school needs to pay to have a JA program. Junior Achievement is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that relies upon the generosity of our donors to pay for programs that reach tens of thousands of youth in the Greater Washington Region.
Who creates the lesson plans for JA's programs?
JA's programs are created by professional curriculum development staff at JA Worldwide. Our programs are rigorously evaluated and revised every few years.
Do JA's programs correlate with my state's educational standards?
Every JA program correlates to the educational standards for your state.
Who will be teaching the JA lessons?
JA's programs are taught by adult volunteers from the local community, including professional businesspeople, parents of students at each school, and local college students. Each volunteer is trained by a member of JA's staff prior to entering the classroom.
How much classroom time will I have to commit to JA?
JA's programs are traditionally taught by volunteers from the local community for 30-45 minutes each week for five to seven weeks, with the exact time commitments dependent upon the grade level of the students. You and the volunteer can determine the specific schedule for the JA program implemented in your classroom.
How do I request a JA program for my classroom?
To request a JA program for your classroom, simply complete the Educator Application on this website.
Can I request a specific JA program for my classroom?
Certainly! JA's programs in grades K-5 are specifically tailored for each grade level, however you can request a different program for your class if you would like. The middle school and high school programs can be used for any grade level in their respective ranges.
Can I request a specific volunteer for my classroom?
Absolutely! There is a field on the educator application to indicate that you would like to work with a particular volunteer.
How will the volunteer's visits to my classroom be scheduled?
After you submit an application, a member of the JA staff will provide you with the contact information for the volunteer that has been assigned to your class (and will provide your contact information to the volunteer, as well). You and the volunteer will contact one another directly to determine the dates and times for the presentation of the JA program.
What should I do if I'm having difficulty contacting my volunteer?
Please contact the staff member responsible for the state your school is located in if you experience any difficulties at all:
What will be expected of me when the volunteer is in my classroom?
Junior Achievement and your volunteer will both expect that you will remain in the classroom to assist with classroom management and any potential disciplinary issues. The volunteer will provide you with a guidebook so that you can follow along with the lessons being taught and link it to material that the class has been covering, if you so choose.
What should I do if I'm going to be absent during a scheduled JA class?
You and the volunteer should create an absentee policy before the first lesson. If you are going to be absent, please contact your volunteer immediately to let them know. If you prefer to be present on the days the volunteer teaches a JA program, please reschedule the lesson for another day. If, however, you have no objections to the volunteer teaching with a substitute teacher in the room, be certain to let the substitute know to expect the volunteer.
My school currently has a partnership with a local business. Is there a way to incorporate JA into this partnership?
Absolutely! Many schools and businesses find that Junior Achievement is an excellent way to grow and develop a partnership. For more information on how to best do this, please contact the staff member responsible for the state your school is located in:
I have additional questions, or other teachers or staff at my school are interested in learning more about Junior Achievement. Who should we contact with our questions?
Please contact the staff member responsible for the state your school is located in. We'd be happy to answer any questions that you or your colleagues may have!
